Walter J. Halkoski 81, 3304 Honeysuckle Lane, Wausau, died Friday September 19, 2003 under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Community Health Care Wausau Hospital. He was born June 19, 1922 in Wausau, son of the late Martin and Pearl (Bukowski) Halkoski. On May 11, 1944 he married Virginia Darnick in Wausau. She survives. Prior to his retirement, Walt had been employed with Walker Manufacturing. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army and was a member of the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau. He was a member of the Men's Club at St. Matthew Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus George Schreier Council No. 1069, the Pere Rene Menard General Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and the Centurions at Wausau Hospital. Walt will be remembered as the neighbor down the street that was always there when any type of help was needed. He had a big heart and at the same time was a big teaser--another trait that will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. Among his favorite pasttimes were his antique car and his membership in the Antique Auto Club, as well as, football, boxing, card playing and polka music. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Halkoski, Wausau, a son, Jerry (Pat) Hale, Valparaiso, Ind., two daughters, Jane (Ray) Wery, Wausau, Lori (Bill) Prutz, Kronenwetter, four grandchildren, Michael, Emily, David & Ben, one sister, Joni (Mike) Stanke, Appleton. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Hale and a brother, Ed Halkoski. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday September 22, 2003 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. Robert Thorn will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the American Legion Honor Guard. Friends may call on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau, is in charge of arrangements.
