Sylvester J. Krieg, 92, Wausau, died Monday March 24, 2014 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
He was born April 16, 1921, in Mosinee, son of the late Sylvester G. and Ida (Runke) Krieg. On February 14, 1946, he married Carol Martin at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives.
Sylvester served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. He entered the service in 1942 and was discharged in 1946 after serving in the Hawaiian Islands, New Guinea and the Philippians. During his service he was awarded four Battle Stars, two Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantry Badge. In respect of his military heritage, Sylvester was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388 and the American Legion, Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau.
Sylvester had been employed with the former Pied Piper Shoe Company in Wausau and later worked as a cost accountant for Weinbrenner Shoe Company, Merrill prior to his retirement. Among his favorite past times, Sy enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the cottage up north. He was a member of the Wausau Elks Lodge No. 248, was a Communion Distributor at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, had served as an assistant Boy Scout Leader and was a member of the Prayer Fellowship of Christian Scouters.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Krieg, Wausau, two children, Dr. Kathryn Krieg, Shorewood, and her children, Kevin and Katelyn; Kenneth (Kathleen) Krieg, Glen Carbon, Ill., and children, Bobbi, Joshua, Colten, Michael and Kyle; a brother, John (Janice) Krieg, Mosinee; a half-sister, Susan (Stan) Ford-Hoffert, Weston.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Vilagene Krieg and Nonie Wilinski.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 29, 2014 at The Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. Rev. Timothy Welles will preside. Entombment will be in the Garden of Eternal Rest Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the VFW Honor Guard. Friends may call on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of the sender's choice.
