Winfield "Win" Schmitt

Winfield Schmitt, 98, Schofield, died Wednesday December 7, 2016 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born March 25, 1918 in Wausau, son of the late Edward and Martha (Scheffner) Schmitt. On May 20, 1943 he married Avis Smith at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She preceded him in death December 12, 2002. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member and Past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388, Wausau. For many years, Win served as the VFW Honor Guard commander and presented the US Flag to many of his comrade's widows. From the time of his military discharge until retiring, Win had been employed at the Wausau Dental Lab. Survivors include seven children, Richard (Diane) Schmitt, Corpus Christi, Tex., Charles (Karen) Schmitt, Phoenix, Ariz., Daniel (Kathy) Schmitt, Gualt, Calif., Sharon (David) Fritz, Wausau, Curt Schmitt, North Richland Hills, Tex., Timothy (Gwen) Schmitt, Powhatan, Vir., Michael Schmitt, Schofield, 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, four siblings, Milton Schmitt, Rothschild, Frances Schmitt, Steuben, Wisc., Annette Ruether, Wausau and Marie Kant, Rockford, Ill. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Tyler Linke and siblings, George, Wilbur and Jim Schmitt and Leroy Darrin. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday December 12, 2016 at St. Therese Catholic Church, Rothschild. Rev. Louis Britto will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, where full Military Honors will be conducted by members of the VFW Honor Guard. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth St., Wausau and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a VFW Memorial Service followed by a parish rosary at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com
