William Volm

William "Bill" Volm 68, Rib Mountain, died Saturday, January 3, 2004 at his home under the care of Comfort Care & Hospice Services. He was born May 13, 1935 in Marathon, son of the late Nicholas and Henrietta (Volkman) Volm. In April of 1957, He met Ursula Junker in Schoenau, Germany. Their romance was by correspondence. Ursula immigrated to the United States on May 5, 1957. Upon his discharge from the Navy, they moved to Marathon and were married on May 28, 1958. With limited funds they transferred to Tacoma, Washington where they began their married life that spanned 45 years. William was in the US Navy from 1953 until discharged in 1958. He then enlisted with the US Air Force from 1958 until discharged as Master Sergeant in 1973. William retired to Marathon after having purchased the Skyline Mobile Home Park, Marathon. He attended North Central Technical Institute for 1 A½ years, majoring in marketing and insurance. William worked as Head Custodian at North Central Technical Institute for many years then he started as Executive Housekeeper for Wausau Medical Center until June of 1989. He then worked for 3-M Corporation until 1995 at which time he decided to dedicate his time and efforts to volunteering for charitable enterprises and traveling. William was a member of the American Legion Alois Dreikosen Post No. 469, Marathon, Air Force Sergeants Association, Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA), member of International IVV, Karnival Klub Kastell and the National Executive Housekeepers Association, He served on the Marathon City and County Boards of Supervisors and was past president of the Wausau/Merrill Germany Club. Some of Bill's favorite places in the world were Kottweiler/Schwanden and Owingen, Germany, Somberek, Hungary, in the United States, were Tacoma, Washington area and home sweet home in Rib Mountain. Survivors include his wife, Ursula Volm, Rib Mountain; one daughter and the joy of his life, Korina Volm, Las Vegas; his siblings, Christie (Geraldine) Bloom, Marathon, Thomas (Marilyn) Volm, Cortez, Colorado, Otilla Hugley, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Charles (Sharon) Volm, Ooesterburg; numerous nieces, nephews, and Judy and Lenny Berg Family. Also survived by very special cousins, Alfred and Mary Jane Volm, Green Bay; special friends, Susie Wiesmann, Marie Jaeger and Judy Rosemurgy. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Nickolas Volm and one sister, Nancy Lang. The funeral mass will be at Noon Thursday, January 8, 2004 at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Rev. Joseph Gyim-Austin and Rev. Dan Crosby will preside. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Marathon. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Ave., Wausau and again from 11:00 a.m. Thursday until the time of services at the church. There will be a 7:00 p.m. prayer services followed by an American Legion Memorial Service Wednesday evening at the Stewart Ave. funeral home. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Anthony Retreat Center, Marathon, the American Cancer Society or the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. We would like to thank Dr. Sadi, Jim and Jack; Dr. T.C. Lee, Dr. Ahuja and Dr. Islam and the staff of Wausau Medical Center , the entire staff of the University of Wisconsin Cancer Center and staff at Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Community Health Care Wausau Hospital.
