William J. Stohr
90, 1117 S. 9th Avenue, Wausau, died Friday April 26, 2002 at the Hospice House, Wausau.
He was born May 1, 1911 in Boyd, son of the late George and Magdaline (Kroy) Stohr. On October 20, 1937 he married Grace T. Buzinski at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wasuau. She survives.
In 1931 he graduated in Advanced Accounting at the Wausau Business Institute and was employed by several Certified Public Accounting firms, later entering into his own accounting practice.
William entered the U.S. Army on June 6, 1942, serving with the 8th Port of Embarkation in Africa and Italy until his honorable discharge on November 17, 1945. He was a member of the American Legion, Montgomery Plant, Post #10, Wausau and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post #388, Wausau. He also served as Treasurer for the V.F.W. Home Show from 1949 - 1958.
Being active in his church was very important to William, he was the President, of the Holy Name Society, in 1958, at the Church of the Holy Name Jesus, Wausau, he was also active in organizing the Holy Name P.T.A., as well as its first President from 1950 - 1951. He assisted in organizing the Holy Name Parish Council and was the council's first President in 1968. In 1976 he was re-elected as President. He was a member of the George Scheier Council, Knights of Columbus and the Pere Rene Menard General Assembly, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was always active in church serving Mass and as a member of the parish finance committee.
He was a member of the former Wausau area Parent-Teachers Association from 1950 - 1956, serving on the Executive Board, as a Treasurer, Vice-President, and President. He also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Wisconsin Valley Library Association.
On February 20, 1946, he was employed by the U.S. Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service as an Internal Revenue Agent in Milwaukee and moved to Wausau on February 20, 1948. He was promoted to the Audit Division Manager in charge of the Wausau office on May 10, 1953, covering an area of 17 counties. He retired May 14, 1971. He was a member of the National Association of Federal Employees, National Treasury Union and National Association of Retired Employees. He is licensed as a C.P.A. by the Wisconsin Department of Regulations and Licensing. He also has been enrolled to practice before the U.S. Treasury Department.
William enjoyed several trips with his wife Grace in Hawaii, Florida and Arizona as well as many sight seeing trips in the United States and Canada. He enjoyed spending time with his daughter and son-in-law in Schofield and their home in Minoqua, as well as playing cards with his family and friends. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Survivors besides his wife, Grace, include a daughter, Marlene (William) Fredrich, Schofield, one sister, Anna Zais, Chippewa Falls; one sister-in-law, Jennie Stohr, Chippewa Falls.
Besides his parents, William was preceded in death by, one brother, Wenzel Stohr and one sister, Sister Mary Boniface Stohr.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m., Monday, April 29, 2002, at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the V.F.W. and American Legion. Friends may call from 1 - 4 p.m., Sunday at the Peterson/Kramer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, and again from 10 a.m., Monday, until the time of services at the church.
There will be a rosary service at 3 p.m., Sunday afternoon, at the sixth street funeral home.
