Wilbur F. Gierl

Wilbur F. Gierl 83, Wausau, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 4, 2012 under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice at Harbor House, Wausau. He was born June 5, 1928 in Colby, son of the late Nicholas and Laurina (Schill) Gierl. On October 14, 1950 he married Virginia M. "Ginger" Check in Stevens Point. She preceded him in death on November 12, 2008. Wilbur graduated from UW-Madison with a Masters Degree and was a high school math teacher for more than 35 years. Over the years he also taught computer science and coached both boys and girls high school basketball. He was the head of the math department at Green Bay Southwest High School prior to retiring in 1985. Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, hunting and golf. His golfing accomplishments included two holes in one. He loved the out of doors and the companionship of his dogs, Lucky, Brandy and Max. He and Ginger were both avid Green Bay Packer fans and have been season ticket holders since moving to Green Bay in 1960. They were in attendance at the famous "Ice Bowl" in 1967. Survivors include his children, Tim (Jan) Gierl, Wausau and Mark (Ann Marie) Gierl, Mequon and his daughter, Marilee (Brad) Potter, Hartland, three grandchildren, Adam (Amy) Gierl and Ryan and Monroe Gierl and one great grandson, Wyatt Gierl. Wilbur is further survived by his two brothers, Robert (Arlene) Gierl, Bessemer, Michigan and Ken (Judy) Gierl, Medford and one sister Elaine (Gerald) Hebert, Neshkoro. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one sister Joanne Leffel. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2012 at The Church of St. Anne, Wausau. The Rev. Steven Brice will preside. Burial will be in Guardian Angels Cemetery, Stevens Point. Friends may call on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
