Walter L Niewolny
83, Wausau, died Thursday, January 17, 2008 at his home, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
He was born August 7, 1924 in Athens, son of the late Fred and Rose (Klavinski) Niewolny. On June 14, 1944, he married Imogene Ziegel at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Athens. She survives.
Walter was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post #388, Wausau and their Last Man's Club. He was employed with the former Weyerhaeuser Corp., Rothschild for 25 years, until his retirement in 1986. Among his many interests, he enjoyed dancing, bowling, fishing, hunting, gardening, listening to polka music and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Imogene Niewolny, Wausau; six children, Jean (Jon) Radtke, Wausau, Sharon (Les Hotchkiss) Niewolny, Weston, Terry (Caroll) Niewolny, White Bear Lake, Minn., Randy (Sheryl) Niewolny, Merrill, Pamela (Scott) Sleeter, Weston and Steven (TamiJo) Niewolny, Wausau; 10 grandchildren, Jay Radtke, Seymour, Jodi (Gregg) Zempel, Wausau, David Niewolny, Austin, Tex., Theresa (Adam) McClurg, Waukesha, Jeremy (Tamara) Niewolny, Commerce City, Colo., Tara (Jeremy) Smith, Wausau, Nicole (fiance Travis Benaszeski)Niewolny, Wausau, Katelyn Sleeter, Aurora, Ill., Tyler Sleeter, Oshkosh and Brandon Niewolny, Wausau; six great-grandchildren, Austin & Zachary Niewolny, Commerce City, Colo., Emily Kraus, Wausau, Olivia Smith, Wausau, and Geoffrey and Taylor Radtke, Hartford; three step grandchildren, Divine, Travis and Billy Jr. Franklin, Wausau; one brother, George (Pat) Niewolny, Wausau; two sisters, Gloria (Harry) Tagliaferri, Misawacka, Ind. and Margaret Kremsreiter, Abbotsford; three sisters-in-law, Ilma Niewolny, Schofield, Lois Niewolny, Wausau and Ethel Niewolny, Rib Mountain; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Walter Niewolny Jr.; four brothers, Frank, Clarence, John, and Irvin Niewolny; and four sisters, Theresa Maier, Sophia Frahm, Merceda Zawicki and Delores Westfall.
The funeral mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008 at The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Rev. Gerald Pehler will preside. Entombment will follow in the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, with full military honors conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post #388, Wausau. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau and again Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. There will be a prayer service Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
