Wallace “Wally” Walters, 79, Athens, left his family to take his place in the Lord’s kingdom after a brave but losing battle with dementia on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at Colonial Health Services, Colby. He was born March 26, 1945 in Stevens Point, son of the late Theodore and Esther (Modrzejewski) Walters. He lived in Custer until the age of 3, then the family moved to Wausau. Wally attended Holy Name school and graduated from Wausau East High School in 1964. After graduating he worked at Marathon Millwork as a Moulder Operator. He was drafted into the US Army in 1966 and had his basic training in Fort Knox KY & Airborne training in Fort Bliss, TX and Army Air Training School in Huntsville, AL. He was promoted to Specialist 4th Class and stationed in Stuttgart, Germany training new soldiers for Vietnam war as instructor for Color Camouflage Concealment. He also served in the Army Reserve until 1970. Wally started at Marathon Electric in Wausau in 1971 as Electrical Motor Connector for 31.5 years and then went to work for Weather Shield in Medford for 5 years until his retirement.
He fell in love and shortly after his honorable discharge, married Lorna Bahr, who survives, on April 11th, 1970. Together they raised 4 children. Scott (Michelle) Walters, Tim (Rochelle Gaffney) Walters, Kristi (Mike Witberler) Walters, Randy (Suzie) Walters. They have 8 grandchildren: Kyle (Cassie) Walters, Brent (Anna Benzschawel) Radloff, Jordan (Brenna) Walters, Marisa (Ethan Hommerding) Radloff, Taylor Crass, Preston Walters, Ethan Walters & Camden Walters and 5 great grandchildren: Bentley, Kroy, Maci, Laityn and Oaklyn. His fur babies: Hailee and Penny.
He is also survived by his brothers in law: Duane ‘Duce’ (Lynn) Bahr and Myron Bahr. His sisters in law: Sandra ‘Sandy’ (Duane) Zugier and Rhonda (Deb Georg) Bahr. Nephews: Dave (Tracy) Hraby, Jason (Tricia) Hraby, Ryan (Jackie) Bahr, Jerry (Amy) Zugier, Seth Bahr. Nieces: Julie (Bob) Rollins, April (Darrell) Weiler, Lisa (Jason) Kunze, Courtney (Dave Tischendorf) Bahr. Great nieces and nephews: Stephan, Lexus, Nicklaus, Jillian, Kailah, Allison, Colbie, Max, Brooke & Mathew, Cody, Emma, Brilyn, Adelyn, Cole, Mya, Jaxon, Jace, Jaggar. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Grace Walters. And his in laws, Emil Bahr and Helen (Bucki) Bahr. Wally and Lorna resided in Weston and moved to Athens in 1973. They spent their free time together at their camper at Lake Chippewa Campground, Hayward. Wally enjoyed taking friends and family out on the water fishing and pontooning and also enjoyed deer hunting with his sons, grandsons and neighbors. Wally was blessed to be part of the Honor Flight in 2014. A Celebration of Life will be held at Schults Country Inn on Saturday, May 31. Memorial Service at 11 am with food and refreshments following until 3 pm. W5931 Church Ave, Merrill, WI. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Athens is in charge of arrangements.
