Surrounded by loving family and staff, Valeria Helen Schumacher of Wausau passed away October 29, 2013 under the care of Aseracare Hospice at Wausau Manor, Wausau, Wisconsin.
Valeria ("Val") was born December 2, 1924 to the late John and Valeria (Rice) Michalski in Mosinee, Wisconsin. Val married the love of her life, Edward ("Eddie") Schumacher of Marathon City, Wisconsin, in December of 1949, in Minneapolis. Val and Eddie have been long time residents of Wausau, where they raised their son, Randy.
While Eddie was away fighting in the Pacific during World War II, Val helped the War effort by assembling guidance systems for submarine torpedoes. After WWII, she made electrical motors at Marathon Electric and tied fishing lures at Marathon Fishing Lure Manufacturing Company. She retired from Wausau Metals Corporation in Wausau where she took great pride in her work assembling windows. Val was a long time member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Parish in Wausau.
Perhaps as a result of her fly-tying background; or because her husband is such a dedicated angler, Val was passionate about fishing. Whether ice fishing in the cold winter or open water fishing the rest of the year, little leisure time went by without Val and Eddie off, together, enjoying their love of fishing.
Valeria is survived by her husband, Eddie, her son, Randy (Miriam) Schumacher of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, her two grandchildren, Kristen and Aaron Schumacher, a step grandson, Alex Keppler, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers - Leo, Charles and an infant, and five sisters - Josephine, Alice, Katherine, Mary and Irene.
After a 6 month stay at Wausau Manor, her family is grateful that, at last, Val is at peace, having truly "gone fishing".
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Rev. Thomas Huff will preside. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau. Friends may call Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau and again on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Wausau Manor and Aseracare Hospice for their compassionate care of Val during her time there.
