Sylvester R. Stiel

Sylvester R. "Sy" Stiel 84, Wausau, died Friday April 9, 2010 at North Central Health Care Facilities, Wausau. He was born April 20, 1925, in Rib Lake, son of the late Wesley and Josephine (Perry) Stiel. On September 6, 1946, he married Marian Olson at St. John Catholic Church, Rib Lake. She survives. An Army veteran of World War II, Sylvester was in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Purple Heart citation. After his service in the US Army, he spent 14 years in the National Guard including two calls to duty. For 27 years, Sy had been employed at the former Cloverbelt Coop on Sixth Street in Wausau as a mechanic. Prior to his retirement he was employed for nine years with Riiser Oil as a fleet mechanic. He enjoyed camping, attending Oktoberfest activities and was an avid Earnhardt Sr. fan. His enjoyment of NASCAR and racing led to his attendance at many area racing events. He had been an active member of a CB Club and was a member of the American Legion in Spirit, Wis. Survivors include his wife, Marian Stiel, Wausau, three children, John (Joan) Stiel, Wausau, Linda (Rick) Krause, Schofield and Judy Stiel, Deerbrook, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, three siblings, Marian (James) Roach, Cudahy, Wesley Jr. (Bobby) Stiel, Albertsville, Ala., Gene (Marge) Stiel, Fond du Lac. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Oleson, one brother, Charles Stiel and two sisters, Arlene Seber and Margaret Kimble. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Weds. April 14, 2010 at The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Rev. Gerald Pehler OFM Cap. will preside. Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Weds. From 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, is in charge of arrangements.
