Sophie Sicklinger

November 9, 1916 — April 29, 2013

Sophie Sicklinger, 96, Marathon, died Monday April 29, 2013 at Wausau Manor under the care of AseraCare Hospice. She was born November 9, 1916, in Scranton, Penn., daughter of the late Carl and Valeria (Krajeswski) Sendzik. The Sendzik family homesteaded a farm in the Goodman area where Sophie was raised. At the age of 16 she moved to Chicago and worked at the Congress Hotel. While home on vacation, she met her future husband at a dance, where he, as a CCC worker was out with friends. On October 2, 1937, she married Fredrick "Freddie" Sicklinger Sr., in Chicago. He preceded her in death May 31, 1997. Sophie had been employed at Marathon Cheese for 16 years, retiring in 1979. For many years, Sophie and Fred tended a large vegetable garden and Sophie would can the extra produce for family use and gifts. In past years, she enjoyed shopping and league bowling. Sophie was also a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon and their Parish Council of Catholic Women. Cooking and baking were specialties of Sophie's and her grandchildren remember fondly sneaking Christmas cookies from her hidden stash in the attic. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that will be sadly missed. Survivors include four daughters, Shirley (Sonny) Lins, Green Bay, Alice (David) Tylinski, Joyce (Dale J.) Braunel and Donna Dallman, all of Marathon, a daughter-in-law, Temberlee (John) Newcomer, Florida, 18 grandchildren, Lani (Kerry) Zilisch, Larry Lins, Lee (Nancy) Lins, Lance (Chris) Lins; Mark (Kim) Tylinski, Cheryl (Clark) Buttke, Michael (Rebecca) Tylinski, Clay (Victoria) Tylinski, Troy (Kathy) Tylinski; Bryan (Karen) Sicklinger, Darren (Olia) Sicklinger, Wade (Jenny) Sicklinger; Corey (Cindy) Braunel, Kurt Braunel, Clint (fiancAC., Rachel Berger) Braunel; Ryan (fiancAC., Aubrey Erdman) Dallman, Dana (Brian) Zajackowski, Nathan (Skyler) Dallman, 26 great-grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Fred A. "Butch" Sicklinger and Charles L. Sicklinger four brothers and two sisters. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Noon Friday May 3, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. The Rev. Msgr. Joseph Diermeier and Rev. Dan Crosby OFM Cap. will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Wausau Manor and AseraCare Hospice for the compassionate care extended to Sophie, during the past year.
