Silverious "Silver" Schillinger, 89, Wausau, died Monday, January 19, 2015 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at his home.
He was born December 23, 1925 in the Town of Frankfort, Rt 1 Edgar, son of the late Vincent and Josephine (Dvorak) Schillinger, the youngest of 10 children. On July 1, 1950 he was united in marriage to Helen Brickheimer at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Athens, by the late Rev. Alois Sherfinski.
Silver graduated from Abbotsford High School in 1943 at the age of 17 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1943 serving until May 13, 1946. Corporal Schillinger was a radio operator in the Signal Corps, 4th Marine Division and saw action in the battle of Iwo Jima for 36 days and also the occupation of China for six months.
After service Silver worked at Laab Cheese Company in Milan as a licensed head cheese maker. In 1951 Silver joined the Wausau Police Department and retired in 1980 after 29 years of service as the Inspector of Detectives. Silver received three citations for thorough police investigations beyond the normal call of duty.
Silver belonged to St. Michael Catholic Church since 1951 where he was an usher for many years. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388, Wausau, the Last Man's Club, life member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Grand Lodge, life member of the Wisconsin Professional Police Association and a current member of the Retired and Disabled Police of America. Silver was a past secretary of the Wausau Police Benefit Association, past chairman of the Police Personnel Committee, past committeeman and awards chairman of St. Michaels Boy Scouts Pack No. 456, and secretary treasurer of the Wausau Police Retired Group.
Silver was the training officer for the Wausau Police and graduated from the Training Officers School, University of Wisconsin, Madison, and also a graduate of Eastman Kodak Photography School in Rochester, New York. He served as past Deputy Sheriff as well as past Deputy Coroner for Marathon County.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, children, Keith (Lisa) Schillinger, Weston and Karen Kinney, Wausau; four grandchildren, Marissa and Aaron Riedel, both of Madison and Jeremy and Matthew Schillinger, both of Weston; sister-in-law, Caroline Schillinger; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his oldest son, Kenneth who passed away October 29, 1972 at the age of 20; seven brothers, William, Ferdinand, Raymond, Rudolph, Otto, Walter and Herbert Schillinger, two sisters, Frances Sauter and Viola Forgie.
Silver had the honor of escorting or guarding George Wallace, Melvin Laird, H.H. Humphrey, President Jimmy Carter and in 1967 he guarded Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and also received his autograph.
He enjoyed many years of retirement, traveling, fishing, hunting and most importantly spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and loving companion, grand-dog, "Weenie" the Dachschund. He also enjoyed doing the daily crossword in the newspaper and playing kings in the corner with his family.
He was a great husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. William Grevatch will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns Post No. 388, Wausau. Friends may call Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau, and again on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Pallbearers for the services will be his grandchildren, Marissa and Aaron Riedel and Jeremy and Matthew Schillinger.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Michael Catholic Church.
