Shirley Marie Snoeyenbos, 74, of Wausau, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2016, at Mountain Terrace in Wausau, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and her loving family.
Born April 13, 1942 in Meridean, Wisconsin, Shirley was the daughter of the late Carlot and Ragna (Sandvig) Prestebak. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joyce and Perry Prestebak, and two infant brothers.
Shirley attended school in Meridean and Durand, and in 1963 she married Edward Snoeyenbos of Eau Claire. They had two sons, Anthony (Tony) and Perry. The family moved to Wausau in 1974, where Ed and Shirley founded Carpet City.
Shirley enjoyed her role as a homemaker. She was an excellent seamstress and upholsterer and her Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas brunches were the stuff of family legends. She loved tennis and, largely due to her influence and enthusiasm, her sons and grandchildren continue to play tennis.
Volunteer work was a very important part of Shirley's life. Some of the organizations for which she volunteered include St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Trinity Lutheran Church and Bethesda Thrift Store. She also volunteered to help with the annual Festival of Trees, and was an active member of the Women's Republican Party of Wisconsin.
Shirley possessed a calm demeanor that spoke volumes combined with a gentle and subtle Norwegian humor inherited from her parents. She was the best wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandma, sister and friend, and will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Ed, sons, Anthony Snoeyenbos and Perry (Denise) Snoeyenbos, of Wausau; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Sydney and Sarah Snoeyenbos; sister-in-law, Janet Neunke, Elk Mound, Wisconsin; brother-in-law, Milton (Pegeen) Snoeyenbos, Bruce, Wisconsin; a special niece, Jean Prestebak; and six nephews and her loyal dog, Kenya.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 23, 2016 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wausau. Rev. Jim Wiebel will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Mountain Terrace and Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services for all the loving care and support they gave to Shirley.
Memorial donations may be directed to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services or the Alzheimer's Association.
