Rubert "Sandy" J. Sandholm 86, Wausau, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at his home surrounded by his loving family, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. He was born January 23, 1921 in Wausau, son of the late Rubert C. and Hattie H. (Vladick) Sandholm. On June 9, 1941, he married Betty J. Hunger in Iowa. She preceded him in death on January 8, 2006. Rubert served in the 94th Infantry Division, 376th Regiment in Patton's 3rd Army. Wounded in Germany on March 22, 1945, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. In 1983, he retired from J. I. Case, Schofield, following many years of employment. Rubert was a charter member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post #388, Wausau. Among his many interests, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, puttering around at his cottage in Northern Wisconsin and most of all enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife and family. Survivors include, four children, Sue (Edward) Richards, Wausau, Tim (Martha) Sandholm, Merrill, Jan (Bruce) Wetzel, Wausau and Kathy (Tom) Schumacher, Wausau; eight grandchildren, Chris (Rick) Walters, Roswell, Ga., Cheryl (Mark) Richards-Hines, Normal, Ill., Beth Sandholm, Tempe, Arz., Lisa Sandholm, Merrill, Eric (Megan) Wetzel, Des Moines, Iowa, Holly Wetzel, Milwaukee, April Schumacher, St. Paul, Minn. and Lindsay Schumacher, Oshkosh; four great grandchildren, Kelsey and Allyson Walters and Tyler and Brianna Hines; three sisters, Ellen Langlois, Wausau, Phyllis Sandholm, Wausau and Betty (Bud) Krueger, Woodruff; one sister-in-law, Caroline Hunger, Wausau; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Betty, he was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Debyl. The funeral mass will be celebrated Noon on Friday, January 26, 2007 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. Robert Thorn will preside. Entombment will be in the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, with full military honors conducted by the VFW Burns Post #388. Friends may call Friday from 11:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services or St. Matthew Catholic Church.
