Ronald ''Butch'' Diers

September 19, 1944 — September 28, 2001

Ronald "Butch" Diers 57, Athens, died Friday, September 28, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer at St. Joseph Hospital Hospice Unit, Marshfield. Ron was born September 19, 1944 in the Town of Hamburg, son of Cecilia (Sommer) Diers, Poniatowski and the late Anthony Diers. He married Mary Jo Johnson April 26, 1969 in Bancroft, Iowa. She survives. Ron was employed as a construction worker until 1980, then farmed in the Town of Johnson. He loved spending time with his family and his grandkids, and also enjoyed a good conversation, hunting, fishing and playing cards. Survivors, besides his wife, Mary Jo, Athens, and his mother Cecilia, Poniatowski, include two daughters Patti Diers, Athens and Vicki (Mike) Tessmer, Oshkosh, one son, Jim (Carrie) Diers, Athens, 4 grandchildren, Lucas Diers, Alyssa and Jared Diers and Emma Tessmer, three sisters, Elizabeth Wolf, Madison, Eleanor Wisnewski, Poniatowski and Elmira (Dale) Masanz, Edgar. The funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2001 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Athens. Rev. Charles Hiebl will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 1 - 6 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Athens and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish vigil service 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Athens funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family will make donations in Ron's name to the American Cancer Society or the hospice unit at St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield.
