Richard "Dick" Sturm
84, Mosinee, died Weds. November 19, 2008 at the Hospice House, Wausau.
He was born September 30, 1924, in Kaukauna, son of the late Henry and Hilda (Grundl) Sturm. On May 7, 1946, he married Marie Doris "Dorie" Kandutsch at the former St. James Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Force as a tail gunner on a B-24, with 30 missions over Europe. In recognition of his service, Dick earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals.
Dick had been employed at Marathon Press for 12 years and retired from Drott/J.I. Case in 1978. Dick and Dorie were Capuchin affiliates, volunteered and lived for several years at St. Anthony Retreat Center serving on the retreat team and assisting with daily duties. His memberships included Charter membership in the Optimists and Toastmasters. He was also a member of the Jaycees, Community Theater, Stunt Night and the South Side Business Association and the American Legion, Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau.
Among his many interests, which included gardening and land development, his true passion was the simplicity and beauty of nature.
Survivors include his wife, Dorie Sturm, Mosinee, four sons, Jim (Mary Jo Schiavoni) Sturm, Madison, David (Theresa) Sturm, Helena, Mont., Donald (Kris) Sturm, Rhinelander and Bill ( Glenavon Maxwell) Sturm, Soldiers Grove, Wis.; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Gerald (Mary) Sturm, California; two sisters-in-law, Jean Sturm, Wausau and Lucy (Wayne) Syring, Aniwa; and one brother-in-law, Dr. Andrew (Nancy) Kandutsch, Surry, Maine.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Donald Sturm.
The memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday November 24, 2008 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Steven Brice, Rev. Thomas Zelinski OFM Cap. and Rev. Werner Wolf OFM Cap. will preside. Friends may call on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice House or the Salvation Army.
