Rev. Hilary F. Simmons, 89, formerly of Wausau, died Saturday August 6, 2005 in Lauderdale Lake, Fla.
He was born April 2, 1916 in Toledo, Ohio, son of the late Joseph and Laura (Markowski) Simmons. Father Simmons received his preparatory training for the priesthood and made his college and seminary studies at the Pontifical College, Josephinum, in Columbus, Ohio. He was ordained into the priesthood on May 30, 1943. He held assignments in LaCrosse, Eau Claire, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Necedah, Hefron, Mondovi, and St. Michael Parish in Wausau.
He was appointed to The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau in June, 1969, where he served the parish as pastor until his retirement in 1984. He was appointed as Dean of the Marathon County Deanery in 1973. He had also been Chaplain to Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Chaplain to the Junior Court of Catholic Daughters. He was a former member of the Elks Club and Lions Club and a member of the Priest's Senate.
Survivors include a sister, Marion Margaret Fischer, Prescott Valley, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sister Mary Laura.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday August 13, 2005 at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Rev. Joseph Gyim-Austin will preside. Burial will be in St Michael Cemetery, Wausau. Friends may call on Friday from 3 - 7 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services all at the church. There will be a parish, Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus rosary service at 6:00 p.m. Friday at the church.
