Raymond F. Wery, 66, Wausau, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital Emergency Department. Ray was born August 18, 1951 to the late Felix and Alice (Fellion) Wery in Menominee, Michigan. He married Jane Halkoski on July 7, 1978 in Wausau.
Ray grew up in Stephenson and Ingalls, Michigan. He never lost his appreciation for the Upper Peninsula and the Great Lakes, becoming an avid fly fisherman, a canoe paddler, and a photographer. These interests led him on several trips to the Boundary Waters of Quetico Provincial Park. He was devoted to his family, his career, and volunteering.
Ray graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1973 with a B.S. in physics. He earned a Master of Science degree in Radiological Sciences in 1975 from UW-Madison. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Radiological Physics, Medical Nuclear Physics, and Therapeutic Radiological Physics. Ray was a member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the Health Physics Society, and the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology. Ray was employed as a medical physicist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, MI, and Aspirus Wausau Hospital, retiring in 2014. Upon retiring, he volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and the Marathon County Historical Society.
Ray is survived by his wife, Jane, his son David, his sister Madge (Dennis) Powell, his sister-in-law Lori (William) Prutz, and his brother-in-law, Jerry (Susan) Hale, as well as several nieces and nephews. Ray's wry sense of humor and his understated manner will be remembered.
The family would like to thank Griff Williams and JoAnn and Paul Grewe for their aid and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Habitat for Humanity in Wausau, the Marathon County Historical Society, or the John R. Cameron Memorial Fund, through the UW Medical Physics department website.
