Peter Arnold Calmes, age 97, formerly of 324 1/2 N. Third Avenue, Wausau, Wisc., died on Saturday, September 4, 2004 at Wausau Manor.
He was born near Mackville in the township of Center, Outagamie County, Wisc. on July 9, 1907, the son of Theodore and Susanna (Ellenbecker) Calmes. His early years were spent near Mackville and in Appleton, Outagamie County, where his father had a saloon and general store and engaged in farming. In 1910 the family moved to a farm in Wuertzburg, township of Johnson in Marathon County. On June 24, 1950 he married Ada Franzoi at St. John the Baptist Church, Wuertzburg. In 1952 Peter and Ada moved to Wausau.
In addition to farming he was a contract carrier for the Wausau Daily Herald from 1935, traveling 100 to 125 miles a day six days a week, until his retirement November 1, 1980. During this same time period he was also a Star Route Carrier for the U.S. Post Office until 1970.
Peter was a member of the Knight of Columbus Council No. 1069 and it's bowling team. He attended many tournaments and won several trophies. Peter also enjoyed playing pool, dart ball and cards, especially sheephead and skat.
He and Ada enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean and Hawaii, car trips to Alaska, California and many western states and bus tours to Canada and New England. In their later years they spent many winters in Florida and Arizona.
Peter loved his family and was a very devoted caring son, husband and brother. Peter was very grateful to Gus Lang for many years of friendship and weekly visits. He was also very grateful for the loving care given to him by the staff at Applegate Terrace and Wausau Manor for several years.
Survivors include his sister, Catherine Scherer, Chicago. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ada on April 6, 1995; his parents; three brothers, George Calmes, Joseph Calmes, Norbert Calmes; six sisters, Barbara Calmes, Josephine Schmirler, Elizabeth Calmes, Marie Boser, Cecilia Schemenauer, Amalia Calmes; sisters-in-law, Martha Reis (George) Calmes, Vera Meske (George) Calmes, Mae Lochen (Joseph) Calmes, Bernice Zettler (Norbert) Calmes; brothers-in-law, Anton Schmirler, Charles Scherer, Joseph Boser and Elmerd Schemenauer.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2004 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Steven Brice will preside. Entombment will be in Holy Angels Mausoleum, St. Michael Cemetery, Wausau. Friends may call on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
