Paul Stephen Schultz, 91, Wausau, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Paul golfed, traveled and was active until just a couple of months before his death, when his Parkinsons finally tired him out. He was born October 17, 1915 in Wausau, son of Paul F. and Catherine (Suchomski) Schultz. His 64 years of marriage to Ruth Kieffer began on July 25, 1942 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives.
Paul was always supportive in his role as a husband and provider, while his wife Ruth was the energy force and fireball that kept him enthusiastic for life. They remained loyal to each other encouraging each other to stay active and young at heart, traveling, golfing, curling, card playing and spending time together with friends and extended family which they treated as their own, all adding to their successful marriage.
Paul was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy and was an Honorary Life Member and Past Commander of the American Legion, Montgomery-Plant Post No. 10, Wausau. He had a 43 year career with Wausau Paper Mills in Brokaw, retiring in 1977 as assistant secretary-treasurer.
His favorite sports included golf, curling, hunting, fishing and bowling. He was an impressive ice and roller skater when he was young. Paul was a good athlete, but rarely spoke of his achievements like the hole-in-one at the Wausau Country Club or that he had been awarded several green jackets. He was also an Honorary Life Member of the Wausau Curling Club. At the club his team laid an 8-End, which was a rare accomplishment.
Paul gave to his community in many lasting ways. He co-founded the Brokaw Credit Union in 1952. He guided business people for more than 25 years as a volunteer for SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives.) He was a charter member of the Wausau Golden K Kiwanis and participated in many activities. He was a member of the Wausau Elks Lodge 248. Many organizations benefited from his generosity.
Faith in God guided Paul throughout his life. He belonged to St. Michael Catholic Church. He was a member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus George J. Schreier Council #1069 and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Pere Rene-Menard Assembly, Wausau.
Paul had a quiet way of understating his own importance in life, with a wry, often surprisingly accurately timed sense of humor. His quick wit remained with him through his life. He was well respected for his own educated business mind, strong business ethics and loyal, gentle, tolerant manner of treating everyone. Ruth will miss her partner, nieces and nephews will miss their role model, friends will miss his companionship and the community will miss his leadership.
Survivors also include a brother Joseph (Connie) Schultz, Dickinson, Texas
many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia and Marjorie.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wausau. The Rev. William Grevatch will preside. Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the American Legion.
