Opal L. McCandless
87, Marathon died Saturday, May 1, 2010 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born October 16, 1922 in Pontiac, Michigan, daughter of the late Clarence and Ethel (Rossman) Holsworth. On October 1, 1938 she married James W. McCandless in South Bend, Indiana. He preceded her in death on May 17, 1992.
Opal and her husband James owned and operated the Gleason Telephone Company for many years. Some of her favorite pastimes included sewing, card making, crafts and writing poetry.
Survivors include her children, Gary (Sandy) McCandless, Washington, Illinois, James (Carol) McCandless, Eau Claire and Sandra Hornung, Marathon, one sister, Mary Zolinski, Peoria, Arizona, one son-in-law, Bob Rice, Weston, 16 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.
Besides her husband James she was preceded in death by one daughter, Gail Rice, one son-in-law, Andrew Hornung, her sisters Doris Maul and Ruth Rubier and one brother, Clarence Holsworth.
Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Fellowship Bible Evangelical Free Church, Marathon. The Rev. Dean Julian will officiate. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. until the time of services all at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Fellowship Bible Evangelical Free Church.
