Nila M. Kaltenberg
81, Wausau, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Wausau Manor Nursing Home, after a courageous battle with an extremely rare form of cancer.
She was born December 12, 1925, in Medford, to the late John and Alva (Hana) Mateofsky. They preceded her in death in 1963 and 1996.
Nila graduated from Medford High School in 1944. She then went on to attend the Marvel School of Beauty Culture in Milwaukee. In 1951, she married Joseph Kaltenberg in North Chicago, Illinois. He preceded her in death. She worked as a hairdresser in Milwaukee before moving to Wausau, where she owned and operated the Elite Beauty Salon, until her retirement in 1995.
Nila will be remembered for always going out of her way to be of service to others. She provided very personalized care and attention to her clients, and often made 'beauty salon' house calls to clients who were shut ins, elderly or ill. Volunteering was a way of life for Nila. She helped with hair care in orphanages, nursing homes and funeral homes for many years. She also volunteered at Northern Valley Workshop, North Central Health Care Center, and the E.A.C.H. Program. Nila often provided the sick and elderly with rides and assistance in shopping and getting to appointments. Having a strong faith, she volunteered at Holy Name Catholic Church and their office. Her commitment to the Catholic faith and devotion to her family guided her throughout her life. Her giving spirit touched the many, many people she helped during her lifetime.
Survivors include her sister, Iris Goldbach, Marathon; one niece, Cindy Goldbach Smith, Rothschild; one nephew, John (Courtney) Goldbach, Hartford; five grand nieces and nephews, Bradley and Daniel Smith, and Hannah, Collin and Samuel Goldbach.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph; and her brother-in-law, Robert Goldbach.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. The Reverend Joseph Diermeier will preside. Entombment will be in the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Hamied Rezazadeh, the nurses and staff at the UW Cancer Center, Aspirus Wausau Hospital and Wausau Manor for their kindness and caring compassion. They would also like to thank Father Joseph Diermeier for his unending love and support.
