Michael J. Dailey, 78, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Cedar Creek Manor, Kronenwetter.
He was born December 1, 1947, in Freeport, Illinois, son of the late Joseph and Arlene (Bottorf) Dailey. He grew up in Pecatonica, Illinois, a close-knit farming community where he spent much of his youth working on family farms and exploring the countryside on horseback. On July 12, 1969, he married Julie Kathryn Woods, his high school sweetheart, in Freeport, Illinois.
Following graduation from his beloved St. John’s University, Michael built a successful career with Traveler’s Insurance before continuing his work with Wausau Insurance as claims manager, RMA and Home Office. When he wasn’t working, he could often be found outdoors pheasant hunting in Northern Illinois, deer hunting in Northwestern Wisconsin, and fishing in Canada. His many trophy mounts serve as lasting reminders of the great hunts, memorable trips, and deep appreciation he had for the outdoors.
A devoted sports fan, Michael faithfully followed St. John’s, Notre Dame, and the Chicago Bears, celebrating their victories and enduring their losses with equal passion. He was also an avid boater and lifelong water-ski enthusiast who cherished every opportunity to be on the water with family and friends. Known for his gift of storytelling, Michael could often be found sharing memories, laughter, and the occasional tale over an Old Style beer. His warmth, humor, and ability to bring people together will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Above all, Michael was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He took immense pride in his six grandchildren and treasured every opportunity to attend their activities, celebrate their accomplishments, and share in their lives. He also maintained lifelong friendships with many of his childhood and hometown friends from Freeport, Illinois, along with those he met during his time as a student and football player at St. John’s. Their shared memories, laughter, and enduring bond remained a cherished part of his life throughout the years.
Survivors include his wife, Julie Dailey; son, Sean (Kathleen) Dailey; daughter, Jennifer (Dean) Haugo; grandchildren, Maura, Sean Patrick, and Shannon Dailey, and Megan, Michael, and Katherine Haugo.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Dailey.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and the dedicated staff at Cedar Creek Manor for the kindness, dignity, and exceptional care they provided to Michael during his final days. Their support and compassion brought great comfort to Michael and his family.
