Mary B. Stencil

Mary B. Stencil (nee Detert), 62, of Wausau, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026. 

Mary was born on July 14, 1963, in Wausau, the daughter of the late David and Kathleen (Warosh) Detert. She spent her life in the Wausau area surrounded by family and friends who meant the world to her. On August 20, 1991, Mary married Duane Stencil in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together they shared many years of marriage, laughter, and adventure until his passing on October 31, 2018. They especially enjoyed motorcycle riding and spending time on the open road. Mary dedicated nearly 40 years of her career to Liberty Mutual, formerly Wausau Insurance Company, where she built many lasting friendships and was known for her reliability and commitment to her work.

 Following her retirement, she worked at County Market to stay active, where she enjoyed connecting with members of the community. Mary had a strong and spirited personality; she could be wonderfully stubborn at times, a trait those who loved her understood and appreciated. She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including spending time with family and relaxing with a cold Point beer. Mary was famously lucky in Packer pools and at the gambling machines at her favorite local taverns, a source of many jokes among her family and friends. More than anything, Mary loved her family. She was a proud mother, an involved grandmother, and a loving great-grandmother who treasured the time she spent watching her grandchildren grow. 

Mary is survived by her daughter, Danielle (Eric) Gesell of Wausau; her grandchildren, Jarek (Hope Uttecht) and Marley; her step-grandchildren, Eric and Lily; and one great-grandson, Oakland. She is further survived by her siblings, Barbara (Lawrence Becht) Perry of Lublin, WI; Debra (Jim) Blair of Weston, WI; Lori (Wade) Parnell of Waunakee, WI; and Barry Detert of Wausau, WI; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Stencil. 

At Mary’s request, there will be no formal funeral services. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home in Wausau. Online condolences may be expressed at www.petersonkraemer.com.
