Martin Burmeister

May 25, 1922 — June 3, 2008

Martin Burmeister 86, Athens, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services. He was born May 25, 1922 in the Town of Berlin, son of the late Julius and Helena (Spletstozer) Burmeister. On February 26, 1961, he married Jean Grace at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Town of Hamburg. She survives. In 1943, Martin graduated from the University of River Falls, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. While in school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After graduation Martin was inducted into the Navy and served in Cuba as a gunner instructor. Following his discharge from service, Martin taught one year at Seymour High School, then resigned due to medical reasons. For the next 22 years, he farmed in the town of Stettin. Martin was a member of the American Legion Chapman-Belter Post #4, Athens and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrew J. Sutter Post #8527, Athens. Among his many interests, he enjoyed fishing and gardening. Martin was a handyman, and could fix almost anything. At the age of 78, he painted his whole house by himself. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Survivors include, his wife, Jean Burmeister, Athens; one brother, Henry (Barbara) Burmeister, Town of Berlin; three step-children; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens. Rev. Andrew Alberts will officiate. Friends may call Saturday from Noon until time of services at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Athens is in charge of arrangements.
