Martha M. Janikowski

Martha M. (Zoromski) Janikowski, 98, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Northwood Retirement Community, Jasper, Indiana She was born June 14, 1910 in Hatley, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Orlikowski) Zoromski. On September 5, 1933, she married Frank J. Janikowski at St. Florians Church in Hatley. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1986. Martha was a graduate of Wausau High School and Marathon County Normal School and taught in rural schools for several years before she was married. She was also very active in St. Michael Church and School. She was a member and officer of the P.T.A. at St. Michael School, chairman and member of the Parish Council of Catholic Women, Ministry of Praise, secretary and member Rosary Confraternity. Martha was also a Girl Scout Leader for more than 25 years. She received the St Ann Award for leadership in Scouting in 1974 for her dedicated service to Scouting. Martha is survived by her daughter Naida (Rich) Slayton of Jasper, Indiana, daughter-in-law Barbara Janikowski of Sun Prairie, seven grandchildren, John (Emiko) Slayton of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Todd Slayton (Tina) of Jasper, Ind., Mark (Paulette) Janikowski of Madison, and Jim Janikowski of Sun Prairie, Lori (David) Castleburg of SunPrairie, and Julie and Janelle Janikowski of Sun Prairie; 13 great-grandchildren, Erica and Allison Slayton, Jordan Haas, Tim and Vickie Janikowski, Nicholas Squires, Bryan, Claire, Chad, Sophia, Isabelle, Olivia and Noah Castleburg and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Josephine Zoromski, her husband of 53 years Frank, her son Rodale "Rod" Janikowski, two brothers, Ben and Joe Zoromski and 4 sisters, Dora Pickering, Helen Lepak, Esther Mikorski, and Alice Meidl. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 23, 2009 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. Herbert Zoromski, nephew of the deceased, and Rev. Dan Hackel will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 9:30 am until the time of services at the church. Peterson-Kraemer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
