With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Margene L. Streit, “Marge,” on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the age of 87. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she left this world surrounded by the love of her family after a life well lived.
Born on March 22, 1937 in Elgin, IL, to Arthur and Ruby Sell. Margene grew up with strong values of faith, family, and hard work. She married the love of her life, Walter “Bill” Streit, on September 13, 1958 beginning a remarkable journey of love and partnership that spanned 66 wonderful years. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, faith, and an enduring commitment to one another.
As a dedicated homemaker, Margene poured her heart into creating a warm and welcoming environment for her family. She was the proud mother of six children: Ted (Jackie) Streit of Suring, WI, Mary Kohlbeck of Edgar, WI, Susan (Mike) Orndahl of Kimberling City, MO, James (Tammy) Streit of Edgar, WI, Darlene L. (Jane Miller) Guyett of Elgin, IL and Donna (Patty Grant) of Elgin, IL.
Margene's memory lives on through her grandchildren: Ted’s children, Kimberly Streit-Brusky and Robert Streit; Mary’s children, Benjamin R. Schmitt, Cooper L. Kohlbeck, Matthew L. Kohlbeck and Meridith L. Kohlbeck; Susan's children, Kathleen, Christine and Cara Orndahl; Jame’s children, Cynthia Collins, Cassandra Collins, Samantha Johnson and Sabrina Wert; Darlene’s children, Thomas (Tommy) Guyett, Jr. and Jack Guyett.
Margene's legacy of love lives on through her 13 great-grandchildren. and a great-great-grandchild on the way. Her enduring lessons of compassion, faith, and resilience will continue to inspire generations to come.
Her home was always bustling with activity, whether it was preparing delicious meals, helping with homework, or hosting countless gatherings that reflected her generous spirit and impeccable hospitality. She enjoyed spending her time knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.
Margene contributed her talents as a bookkeeper and church secretary, balancing her professional responsibilities with unwavering commitment to her family and community. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, reflected in her 28 years of service to St. John Lutheran Church (High Steeple) and her open heart to all who needed encouragement or care.
Margene had a deep and abiding faith that guided her throughout her life. She was a pillar of strength, offering wisdom, kindness, and support to all who knew her. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the countless lives she touched with her generosity and love.
She is survived by her loving husband, Walter “Bill” Streit; her six children and spouses, 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ruby Sell of Elgin, IL and many cherished family members and friends, both near and far.
A celebration of Margene's life will take place on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church (High Steeple). Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a service and interment at St. John’s Cemetery. The day will conclude with a luncheon for family and friends to gather and remember her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 119415 Huckleberry Road, Edgar, WI 54426, as a reflection of her lifelong commitment to giving back.
The world has lost a remarkable woman, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who loved her. May her memory be a blessing, and may we honor her legacy by carrying forward her values of love, faith, and family.
