Lydia E. Handrick-Hornung
91, Marathon, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Aspirus Hospice House, Wausau.
She was born January 5, 1921 in Green Valley, Wis., daughter of the late Carl and Bertha (Gall) Hirsch.
On May 30, 1941, she married Mark Handrick at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Halder. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1980. Her second marriage was to Herman "Hummy" Hornung on August 13, 1988 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2000.
Lydia worked at Marathon Cheese for 25 years. She was a member of the St. Mary PCCW, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Red Hats and the Hillcrest Homemakers. Among her favorite pastimes, she enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards, dominos and loved to travel. Lydia was an active member of the Marathon Area Swim Center and volunteered at the St. Anthony Retreat Center and St. Mary School.
Survivors include, five children, Carl (Kay) Handrick, Darien, Wis., Duane (Diane) Handrick, Marathon, Edward (Mary) Handrick, Durango, Colo., Anita (Chuck) Martin, Marathon and Gary (Kathi Dooley) Handrick, Quincy, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one step-son, Wally (Betty) Hornung, Wausau; one step daughter-in-law, Marlene (Keith Hanke) Hornung, Marathon; one sister-in-law, Lucille Hirsch, Marshfield; and six step grandchildren; 12 step great grandchildren; 2 step great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and both husbands, she was preceded in death by one step granddaughter, Lynnise Eckardt; her infant sister, Lena; her sister, Elsie Gall; and four brothers, Edmund, Henry, Arthur and Reinhold Hirsch.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Marathon. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon and again on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. There will be a rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary School, Marathon.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Hilary Bingol, Dr. Christopher Peterson, the staff at Aspirus Wausau Hospital and the staff at Aspirus Hospice House, for all the wonderful care and support given to Lydia over the past few months.
