Lucille A. Ferguson
Wausau, died Monday January 12, 2009 at Wausau Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Wausau, daughter of the late James and Emily (Riplinger) Halada. On May 20, 1939, she married Dr. George T. Ferguson in San Francisco. He preceded her in death October 24, 1944, while being held by the Japanese as a World War II prisoner of war.
Following their marriage, the Ferguson's lived in Shanghai, China where Dr. Ferguson was stationed with the US Navy Asiatic Fleet and during that time, Lucille taught school there. Lucille served as USO Director during World War II in Hawthorne, Nev., San Francisco and San Diego, Calif. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed as a kindergarten teacher in G.D. Jones and Grant Schools. She had been a member of Resurrection Parish, the YWCA, the Antique Study Club and the Marathon County Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Kennedy, Mesa, Ariz., two nieces, Judith Grade, Bothell, Wash., Mary Whaley, Eugene, Ore., a nephew, R. James Halada, Portland, Ore., other cousins, relatives and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roland J. Halada.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Weds. January 21, 2009 at The Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. Rev. William Grevatch will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wausau. Friends may call on Weds. From Noon until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Resurrection Parish or to the Lucille and George Ferguson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin, 500 Third St., Suite 310, Wausau, Wis. 54403.
