Louis Wimmer Sr.
81, Wausau, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at his home.
He was born Sept. 25, 1924, in Schofield, son of the late Henry and Mathilda Zinser. When he was two years old, he was orphaned and raised by the late Joseph and Mary Wimmer. On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Shirley Dietsch at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She preceded him in death Oct. 3, 1994.
Louis entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 3, 1943, serving in the South Pacific. He was severely wounded in Booghinville on Nov. 20, 1944, and was hospitalized for eight months, receiving a medical discharge Aug. 8, 1945. He received the Combat Infantry Badge and was awarded the Bronze Star for valor in combat.
For many years, he was employed with the Marathon County Veteran's Service Office and later with the Blinded Veterans Association. He was a member of the Wausau Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post No. 388, Wausau American Legion Montgomery-Plant Post No. 10 and a life member and past State Commander of the Blinded Veterans Association.
Survivors include three children, Sharon Bogle, Cathy Mais and Louis (Deb) Wimmer, all of Wausau; four grandchildren, Lisa (Anthony) Virgil, Sherry Bogle, Troy Bogle and Bryan Hodgkins; nine great-grandchildren, A.J., Brianna, Dustin, Mitchel, Jonathon, Alyssa, Tyler, Samantha and Bryce; and one sister, Leona Reinders, Neenah. Besides his parents and wife, Shirley, he was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Gerry H. Bogle.
Private burial will be in Mechanic's Ridge Cemetery, town of Wausau.
