Louis A. Campanile

Louis "Louie" A. Campanile, 92, Athens, formerly of New Jersey, died Friday, February 13, 2015 at Golden Living Center-Continental Manor, Abbotsford, under the care of Aseracare Hospice. He was born September 24, 1922 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, son of the late Anthony and Maria (Selletto) Campanile. Louis grew up in New Jersey and attended Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School. One of his fondest memories, was winning a trip to Europe with his twin brother. He visited Malaga, Spain and the thrown of Queen Isabella. He then went on to Monte Carlo and to Cathedral II-Dumo and also traveled to see the remains of St. Charles Baraomo who was placed in a glass coffin over 400 years ago. Lastly, he went on to visit Rome to see St. Peter's Square and the Cathedral. In June of 1935, Louie had a personal interview with Pope Pious the XI and also with Mussolini, the Dictator of Italy. He then went on to Naples to visit the Prince of Italy and while he was there, he visited with his grandmother, Philimena. Following his graduation, Louie entered the 81st Infantry Division called the Wildcat Division in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on February 22, 1946. Louie and his brothers took over their fathers landscaping business and he also worked as a dispatcher for the New Jersey Police Department. In 1948, he married Gertrude Masco, they later divorced. He then met Jacqueline Hosely and they were married in February of 1989. Among his favorite pastimes, he enjoyed telling his life history (many loved to listen), pistol shooting, hunting, gardening and flowers. Survivors include, his son, Joseph Campanile, New Jersey; his step-son, James Masco, New Jersey; two sisters, Rita (Sabatino) Nuzzi, Florida and Vincy Christen, New Jersey; three grandchildren, Ron (Becky) Wilde, Michael Campanile and Joe Campanile Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Kate Wilde; and many nieces and nephews. Beside his parents and both spouses, he was preceded in death by two children, Frank Campanile and Maria Wilde; two brothers, Sal and Frank Campanile; and one sister, Lillian Serano. The memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Athens. Rev. Paul Hoffman will preside. Friends may call on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Athens is in charge of arrangements.
