Lorraine G. Martyn

Lorraine G. Martyn, Marathon, formerly of Edgar, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 while under the care of Heartland Hospice at Copperleaf, Marathon.

She was born May 25, 1931 in Edgar, daughter of the late Emil and Olga (Borchardt) Baumann.  On June 2, 1954, she married Isaac Martyn at St. John Lutheran Church, Town of Wien.  He preceded her in death in July 2001.

In her earlier years Lorraine taught at Upham and Fairchild Schools in the Town of Frankfort.  After teaching she went to work at Marathon Cheese until her retirement.  Some of her favorite pastimes included sewing, crocheting, swimming at the Marathon Swim Center, quilting, and traveling with her friend, Leonard Leffel.  She was also active in the Women’s Group at St. John Lutheran Church.  Lorraine was a lifetime member of the Edgar Steam Show and loved telling people about the Strupp Schoolhouse on the show grounds where she attended school and also taught there as well. She also owned the sawmill that operates at the Steam Show. On Sundays, she especially loved listening and dancing to polka music!

Survivors include her children, Elton (Dorrie) Martyn, Edgar and Jeffery (Jane) Martyn, Stratford, one granddaughter, Amanda (Tyler) Hilgart, Auburndale and three great grandchildren, Haley, Madison, and Blake Hilgart. She is further survived by brother-in-law, William Martyn, Edgar, and two sisters-in-law, Sandra Martyn, Athens, and Evelyn Christianson, Escanaba, MI. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lois Umnus and her brother-in-law, Fred Umnus. She is further preceded in death by multiple brothers/sisters-in-law: Elmer and Mae Martyn, Aniwa, Roman and Esther Schmirler, Schofield, John Christianson, Escanaba, MI, Judy Martyn, Edgar, Edward Martyn, Athens, and Emily Martyn, Wausau.

A special thank you is extended to the staff at Copperleaf Assisted Living in Marathon as well as the Heartland Hospice staff who took such wonderful care of Lorraine.

A Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2025 at St. John Lutheran Church, ELCA, 120500 County Road N, Edgar, WI  54426.  The Rev. Jeff Tarras will officiate.  Visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of services--all at the church.  Burial will follow at a later date at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Town of Frankfort.
