Lorraine M. Kortbein

Lorraine M. Kortbein, age 88, Wausau, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. She was born May 9, 1924 in the town of Emmet, daughter of the late Sam and Eva (Kowalefski) Rossi. On November 14, 1942 she married Joseph Kortbein at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1996. Lorraine loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also enjoyed needlework, playing bingo and sheepshead. She was an excellent cook and was known for her unique wildlife recipes and especially her homemade ravioli. In her younger years you could find her up north with her single shot 22, shooting at the red squirrels or gardening. Later in life she enjoyed watching baseball, cheering on the Chicago Cubs. Survivors include her three children, Antoinette (Jerry) Engman, Rothschild, Bernadette Fredrick, Birnamwood, and Dennis (Peggy) Kortbein, Irving, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Joyce Rossi, Wausau, many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Besides her parents and husband, Joseph, she was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph and Clinton, one granddaughter, Sara, infant grandson, John, one great-grandson, Lucas, and two brothers, Larry and Ed. The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at St. Mark Catholic Church, Rothschild. The Very Rev. Allan L. Slowiak will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wausau. Friends may call Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services all at the church. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Marywood Center for their excellent care given to Lorraine during her three years there.
