Leona D. Carr

Nov 5, 1928 — Jul 4, 2026

Leona D. Carr, 97, of Wausau, formerly of Marathon, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at Mount View Care Center in Wausau, under the care of St. Croix Hospice.

She was born November 5, 1928 in Mosinee, daughter of the late Albert and Stella (Blaszak) Zawislan. Leona graduated from Mosinee High School in 1947.

Leona had a fulfilling and diverse work history which she often talked about. Her earliest job included housecleaning in "several beautiful homes on Wausau's East side". She was part of the 'Rosie the Riveter' era when she welded for Muskegon Piston in Schofield. She owned Carr's Bar in Town of Stettin. Leona moved on to what would be her primary career until retirement of being a CNA at Sunny Vale and Mount View Care Center. She also managed and bartended for American Legion, VFW, and Thunderbird bars in Wausau and worked in ginseng gardens. She spent a year living in Green Bay where she was the manager of a Hallmark Store. Leona had stories and enjoyed aspects of every job.

After retirement she was able to enjoy hobbies and her family found out how creative and crafty she was. She had always been great at cooking and sewing, but when she gardened, painted the most beautiful ceramics, and made some grandchildren baptismal gowns, it was amazing to see someone who spent their life often working two jobs at a time get to enjoy and express herself. Leona had an incredible work ethic and instilled that in her children.

Leona is survived by her children, Carol, Diane (Bob), Gary, Randy (Cheri), Brian (Judy), Lynn (Lynn) and her daughter-in-law, Char. Her grandchildren, Kim, Kris, Brian, Michael, Amy, Carrie, Christy, Casey, Dana, Gina, Kevin, Kelly, Kory, Kyle, Kody, Garret, Allison, Lucas, and Samantha. Leona has many more cherished great and great-great grandchildren. Another passion was to boast about all of her grandchildren's accomplishments or "how smart they were" when they were little.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, John, Marie, Angeline, Ted, Sophie, Ben, Helen, Edward, Clara, Stella, and Bernice. Three sons, Wayne, Dale, and Patrick. A daughter-in-law, Doreen, son-in-law, Len, and granddaughter, Alicia also preceded her in death.

In accordance with Leona’s wishes, there will be a private service and burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in Marathon.
