Leona Burk, 87, Wausau, died Thursday January 16, 2014 at Our House Assisted Living, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
She was born December 26, 1926 in Wausau, daughter of the late Carl Sr. and Leona (Shipway) Wimmer. She graduated from Wausau East High School and the former St. Mary's School of Nursing. She worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Wausau and later for the Marathon County Health department until the time of her retirement in 1989.
Leona had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir, as well as for many weddings and funerals. Leona and Tom enjoyed traveling, going up north and trips to the casino. Above all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Chris (Patricia) Burk, Junction City, Ore., John (Dixie) Burk, Wausau, three daughters, Kathleen Drake, Sandra (Tom) Magnuson and Susan Erdman, all of Wausau, ten grandchildren, Matthew (Ho) Drake, Rebecca (Dan) Felkner, Laurie Drake, Alysa (Patrick) O'Toole, Wade & Cory Magnuson, Casey (Holly) Burk, Jeff Burk, Helena Erdman and Erica (Carl) Erdman; five great grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, Tom, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael, three grandchildren, Sean Callahan, Jesse Burk Witter, Kari Doctor; a great grandson, Brenden Erdman, one brother, Carl Wimmer and two sisters, Mary Ann Steckling and Dorothy Nowitzke.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday February 7, 2014, at The Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. Rev. Timothy Welles will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday February 6, 2014 at the Sixth Street funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services or the Charity of your choice.
