Leon E. Sahr
82, 1603 E. Wausau Avenue, Wausau, died Thursday July 10, 2003 under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Colonial Manor Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Wausau.
He was born March 6, 1921 in Tomahawk, son of the late Matthew and Clara (Klapperick) Sahr. On September 28, 1946 he married Doris Grosskreutz at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives.
Leon was employed as a granite cutter at Lake Wausau Granite and later served as president of the company. Throughout his life, he was involved in many cabinetry, remodeling and carpentry projects. When Leon was not pounding nails, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. One of the biggest joys in his life was helping other people in need.
He was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. Leon was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Burns post No. 388 and the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau. He was also a member of the Wausau Elks Lodge, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Knights of Columbus George Schreier Council #1069, Wausau.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Sahr, Wausau, two children, Robert (Marilyn) Sahr, Menominee, Mich., Carol (Bruce) Triplett, Montrose, Minn., five grandchildren, Tim (Kelly) Sahr, Okinawa, Heidi (Ryan) Borowski, Marinette, Korey Sahr, Oshkosh, Brian Triplett, North Branch, Minn., Kevin Triplett, Montrose, Minn, four sisters, Sister Matthia FSPA, LaCrosse, Katherine Jax, Austin, Minn, Florentina Richards, Wausau and Margaret (Edwin) Juedes, Weston, one brother, John (Betty) Sahr, Wausau. Besides his parents, Leon was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Sahr and a sister, Leona Springer.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday July 14, 2003 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. William Grevatch will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the VFW and American Legion. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a parish vigil service at 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Sixth Street funeral home.
The family extends special, heartfelt thanks to the nurses and caregivers from Colonial Manor and the Comfort Care Hospice program for their care, support and treating Leon like a member of their own family.
