Leon Andrew Burger
94, Wausau, died Friday, March 25, 2011 at his home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
He was born August 17, 1916 in Wausau, oldest son of the late Theodore and Marie (Chaignot) Burger. On November 14, 1940 he married Alma Grosskreutz in Wausau. She preceded him in death on February 19, 1997.
Leon was a self made man who was admired for his business acumen. As a young man, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to form Burger Trucking Company. He was a real estate developer, owner and investor who never retired, he did it his way. During World War II Leon served his country in the United States Army Engineers stationed in Burma, China and India. He was a member of the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post No. 388, Wausau, Knights of Columbus George Schreier Council No. 1069, Wausau and the Elks Lodge No. 248, Wausau. Leon enjoyed big game hunting and spending time with his buddies in the office. A very giving man, Leon donated to several local churches. He took pleasure in hosting annual parties that got bigger each year, attended by family, friends and acquaintances.
He is survived by his special friend, Carmen Kramer; one brother, Theodore (Jean) Burger; one sister-in-law, Susan Burger, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, Alma, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine and three brothers, Dennis, Franklin and Richard.
The funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. The Rev. William Grevatch will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 - 8 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 6th Street, Wausau and again on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
The family is appreciative to his caregivers, especially Suzanne, Peggy and hospice nurse, Amy. Special thanks to nephew Ted Burger Jr. who took the responsibility of keeping the watch over uncle in his final years.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in Leon's name.
