Leo H. Remmel, 90, Wausau, died Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Colonial Manor Medical & Rehabilitation Center, Wausau.
He was born March 30, 1914 in Wausau, son of the late John and Isabelle (Mueller) Remmel. On June 24, 1940 he married Marie Peters in a double wedding ceremony with Gertrude Peters and Edwin Burek, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Edgar.
Leo was employed by Leaps Greenhouse and retired from Nanik at age 82. In recognition of his long working career the Mayor of Wausau proclaimed it to be "Leo Remmel Day" at the time of his retirement. His hobbies included cheering on the Green Bay Packers, reading, and traveling to visit family, relatives, and friends.
One of life's greatest pleasures for Leo was his contact with people. He was a long time member of the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus.
Survivors include his wife, Marie, three daughters, Anita Remmel, Wausau, Donna (Frank) Ellenbecker, Rice Lake,. and Sharon Remmel, Maplewood, Minn.; six grandchildren, Robert (Diana) Ellenbecker, Green Bay, Troy (Stephanie) Ellenbecker, Cottage Grove, Wisc., Todd (Vicki) Uhlenbrauck, Maplewood, Minn., Mickelle (Dan) Gebhard, St. Croix Falls, Stacey (Tim) Brown, Oakdale, Minn., and Denae (Mark) Frampton, Prior Lake, Minn., thirteen great grandchildren, Jeffrey, Rebecca, Zachary, Haley, Madeline, and Charlie Ellenbecker; Brittany and Nicole Uhlenbrauck; Steven and Cory Gebhard; Samantha, Alexcia, and Elivia Frampton; two sisters, Evelyn (Victor) Tranetzke, Wausau, and Marjorie Peterson, Wausau; one step sister, Iva Hansen, Green Bay. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Remmel, his parents, John and Isabelle Remmel, his stepmother, Magdalene (Janisch) Remmel, two brothers, Ralph (Hazel) Remmel, and Alex (Marion) Remmel; two sisters, Loretta (Henry) Gottschalk and Agnes (Lawrence) Mohelnitzky; four step-brothers, Robert, Carl, Emil, and Walter Janisch, and four step-sisters, Emmile Ringle, Violet Kalwinski, Ila Goetsch, and Ruth Stencil.
The funeral mass will celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2004 at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Rev. Joseph Gyim-Austin will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. There will be a parish prayer service Sunday 7:00 p.m. at the Sixth Street funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus or to the American Cancer Society.
