Lawrence G. Lohr

Lawrence "Larry" G. Lohr 95, Marathon, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Allison House, Schofield. He was born March 4, 1915 in Sauk County, son of the late Johann (John) and Pauline (Wawrock) Lohr. On July 14, 1940, he married Elsie Hagen at Vermont Lutheran Church, Black Earth, Wisconsin. She preceded him in death on June 11, 2002. Larry graduated from Prairie du Sac High School in 1934 and was very active in sports, earning three medals in track and a total of 14 letters. In 1937, he graduated from Worsham College of Embalming and worked for several funeral homes in Southern Wisconsin. In 1944, he moved to Marathon and purchased the Stieber Furniture Store and Funeral Home. Larry and Elsie owned and operated the Lohr Furniture Store and Funeral Homes from 1944 until 1966 when they sold the business to Tom Kraemer. In 1967, Larry and Elsie began construction of the Pine Valley Golf Course, Marathon. The course opened in 1969 and together they operated Pine Valley Golf Course until 1983 when they sold it to Richard and Joyce Lohr. Larry was on the Board of Directors for Marathon State Bank, a member of the Marathon School Board, a member of the Marathon Lions Club and a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. Following retirement in 1983, Larry and Elsie spent winter months in Florida so they could golf year round. He also enjoyed family events with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include, three children, Jacklyn (Werner) Burkat, Green Bay, Linda (Jared) Redfield, Amherst and Richard (Joyce) Lohr, Marathon; six grandchildren, Eric (Anya Schmemann) Lohr, Bethesda, Md., Tanya (Andrew) Lohr-Kougl, West Bend, Christopher Redfield, Amherst, Amanda (Kelly) Bennett, Grand Chute, Jessica Redfield, Stevens Point and Amy (Wayne) Whitaker, Allentown, PA; six great grandchildren, Graci and Kobe Bennett, Alexei and Andrei Lohr, Elena and Eadrick Lohr-Kougl; two step-great grandchildren, MacKenzie Kougl and Mallory Kougl; one brother, Armin Lohr, Columbus, N.C., and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Elsie, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010 at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Marathon. Rev. Jon W. Hadler will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon and again Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Marathon or Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. The family would like to thank the staff at Allison House, Schofield, Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and Dr. Jeffrey Oswald for their care of Larry.
