Laura M. Nest
90, Wausau, formerly of Marathon, peacefully passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Our House Assisted Living, Wausau.
She was born October 18, 1920 in the town of Marathon, daughter of the late Herman and Frances (Blume) Hornung. On June 24, 1950 she married Walter Nest at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. They resided on South Road, Marathon most of their lives. Walter preceded Laura in death on April 16, 2004.
Laura graduated from the former St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Wausau in 1942. She joined the Army Nurse Corps during WWII and was discharged in March of 1946. She worked as a nurse for 44 years in various positions including as an industrial nurse in the surgical unit and the polio unit at St. Mary's as well as a Marathon County Public Health Nurse before retiring in 1983.
She was a member of the American Legion Alois Dreikosen Post #469, Marathon and she was also a volunteer for years at St. Mary Church and School.
Laura and her husband loved to travel throughout the USA as well as Germany. She loved spending time with her family, children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Garold Nest, Atlanta, Georgia, Judy (Jake) Schlesser, Independence, Kay (Bill) Oelke, Marathon and John Nest, Maitland, Florida, ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Herman and Ludwig Hornung and four sisters, Amanda Kurtzweil, Erna Baumann, Frances Lemmer and Nora Hall.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at Noon Saturday, March 5, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. The Rev. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with full military honors conducted by the American Legeion Post #469. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Marathon and again on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. There will be a military memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at the Marathon funeral home conducted by the American Legion.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Laura's name.
