Larry A. Peterson, 66, of Wausau, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield after a courageous battle with cancer. Facing his illness with strength and dignity, Larry made the brave decision to pass on his own terms, ensuring his final moments were filled with peace and comfort and surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born on June 25, 1959, in Medford, the son of Charles and Ruth (Anderson) Peterson. Larry worked for HSU Ginseng in Wausau for 37 years, until his recent retirement. He often spoke candidly about the challenges of his work, but it was clear he had a deep-rooted pride in what he did.
Larry had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and an adventurous spirit, finding joy in motorcycle rides along scenic roads, time on the golf course, camping, and exploring nature. Hunting was one of his greatest passions, especially the camaraderie and lasting memories shared at the shack. In recent years, he found great enjoyment in traveling throughout Wisconsin, taking in the sights and exploring new things while on spontaneous adventures. Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. Larry held a special place in the hearts of many, and he had a unique way of making others feel seen, cherished, and loved.
Survivors include his father, Charles Peterson; fiancée, Carole Greene; three children, Jessica (Joe) Scott, Dustin (Kris) Peterson, and Brooke (Jade) Arnold; four grandchildren, Josslyn Schellinger, Kinley Peterson, Finn Arnold, and Nora Arnold; 11 siblings, Deb Dahl, Mike (Beverly) Peterson, Pat (Roger) Hamus, Cindy (Russell) Hamus, David (Leta) Peterson, Dale (Chris) Peterson, Darla Peterson, Kevin (Stacey Kilty) Peterson, Kenny (Amy) Peterson, Jamie (Nikki) Peterson, and Chucky (Carrie) Peterson; two brothers-in-law, George Velon and Ron Haas; sister-in-law, Audrey Peterson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Peterson; three siblings, Char Velon, Mark Peterson, and Julie Haas; one brother-in-law, Lance Dahl; and one nephew, Parker Peterson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 3400 Stewart Avenue, Wausau. Visitation will be on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to his family to be donated in Larry’s memory to a hunting organization serving youth and underserved persons.
