After 99 years, God called home Julianna E. Thurs while she was at rest in her bed.
Julia was born on January 11, 1914, in Stettin to Herman and Amanda (Beilke) Radke. At 14, her doctor told her she would die of her ruptured appendix. She went on to live another 85 years and didn't put much stock in doctors' opinions after that.
At 22, she married the love of her life, Louis Thurs. The couple lived in Little Chicago for 33 years. They raised their family to attend church every Sunday, and Julia was a lifetime member of Ladies Aid.
For the next 39 years, in the proud Stettin home that Louie built for them, the pair could be found playing cards or marbles with friends and family all night long, with Julie serving her classic snack of bread with homemade raspberry sauce or freshly baked chocolate-chip cookies.
Julia's children, Sharon and Bruce, remember her sewing, baking, and always jumping up to dote on others. She had a sweet smile, a selfless nature, and an unwavering positivity about her. Julia loved to be outdoors: tending her garden, feeding the birds, and even climbing onto the roof to shovel off snow.
In 2008, Julie and Louie moved to Wellington Place, where Louie died a year later at age 95. For nearly 73 years, they were constant companions.
Julie passed on December 4, 2013, and is survived by her daughter, Sharon Ohde; her son, Bruce Thurs (wife, Katherine); her sister, Ruth Venske; 4 grandchildren: Michael Ohde, Lisa Kaminski (husband, Tom), Chad Thurs (wife, Sarah), & Brandon Thurs (wife, Randi); 5 great-grandchildren: Mitchell & Nicole Kaminski, Kelly (husband, Tim) Mecikalski, & Julianna and True Thurs; & 1 great-great-grandchild: Ellianna Kaminski. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers, 4 sisters, and her son-in-law.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Wellington Place & Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services for the care and compassion they gave Julia.
