Julia Steffen

September 12, 1920 — January 22, 2017

Julia Steffen, 96, Hazelhurst, died Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Delmar Gardens of O'Fallon, Missouri. She was born September 12, 1920 in Merrill, daughter of the late Raymond and Charlotte "Lottie" (Strable) Parent. On June 14, 1941 she married Melvin Steffen in Wausau. He preceded her in death on December 17, 1985. Julia worked as a nurse's aide in surgery for the former St. Mary Hospital. She had a vivacious personality and loved anything to do with outdoors including being an avid bowhunter for not only deer but also bear. Julia and Melvin were one of the founders of the Rib Mountain Bowman and Julia won many medals in competitions around the state. Having never driven a motorcycle before, she "borrowed" one from a nephew, disappearing for around 2 hours. In 1971 she broke her hip while out on a snowmobiling trip. It slowed her down, but not much. Survivors include her nephews and nieces, Lloyd (Theresa Stack) Kannenberg, Loren (Karri Kline) Kannenberg, Anthony (Katherine Hoveland) Kannenberg, Mike (Mary) Steffen, Patrick (Renee) Steffen, David Steffen, Gary Steffen, Laurie Steffen, Rick Steffen, Lee (Rick) Strassman, Kathy (Kim) Ball, Jerry Steffen, Chuck (Olga) Sebela, Merrilee (Steve) Godek, Karen (Bob) Lantz, Joyce Sebela-Whelchel (John Meyer), Jim (Jeri) Wagner, Tom (Dawn) Wagner, John (Elizabeth) Wagner, Jonie (Joel) Stackman and many great-nephews and nieces and great great-nephews and nieces whom she was very close with. Besides her parents and husband, Melvin, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Rose Kannenberg and a nephew, Raymond Kannenberg. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2017 at The Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Wausau. Entombment will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau.
