Joseph “Joe” Ritger, 61, Newport, TN, formerly of Marathon, died Friday, December 6, 2024, in Newport following a short and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born January 12, 1963, in Wausau, the son of the late Adolph and Germaine (Bergs) Ritger. Joe is a graduate of Marathon High School and continued his education at North Central Technical Institute. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lakeland University in Sheboygan, WI. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Germany, Bosnia and Yugoslavia.
Joe had many favorite pastimes. He was an avid fisherman and birdwatcher. He took pride in his gardens and yard, which included many bird houses and feeders. Joe kept active and enjoyed hiking, kayaking, running in several marathons and many 5K races over his lifetime. Joe loved nature and being outdoors, finding peace while fishing on a lake or while enjoying the majestic views of the mountains.
Joe was a humble man and had a gentle and generous soul. Ready to come to the aid of others when in need. Most recently he volunteered and donated to Isaiah 117 House, which provided physical and emotional support for children awaiting foster care placement.
Joe was a beloved brother and is survived by his six siblings, Sue (Jim) Meseberg, Wausau, Mary (Kevin) Tall, Egg Harbor, Kate (Dean) Borens, Rothschild, Rick (Mary) Ritger, Mosinee, Jane (Ronald Moore) Ritger, Marathon and Judi (Troy) Brown, Wausau. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marathon. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Diermeier will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 469, Marathon. Visitation will be on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Joe’s memory.
