Joseph A. Thornewell

Joseph A. Thornewell 89, Wausau, died Monday, August 15, 2011 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Harmony Terrace Court, Wausau. He was born March 20, 1922 in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Arthur and Marie (Reilly) Thornewell. On December 30, 1945, he married Laura Prahl in Birnamwood. She survives. Joseph was a veteran of the United States Army serving with the 507 Engineering Group during World War II. For many years, he worked for the former James River Corp., Wausau, until his retirement. Joseph was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Burns Post No. 388, Wausau and a member of the Labor Temple Association. Among his favorite pastimes, he enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, gardening, hunting and was an avid fisherman. Survivors include, his wife, Laura Thornewell, Wausau; two sons, David (Ilene) Thornewell, McAllen, Tex. and Steven (Mary) Thornewell, Wausau; two granddaughters, Michelle Bloomfield and Patricia (fiance' Tim Carlson) Thornewell; three great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and one sister, Loretta. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson; three brothers; and one sister. Funeral services will be at Noon on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Rev. Gary Schultz will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum with full military honors conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wausau. Friends may call Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until time of services at Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau is in charge of arrangements.
