John S. Stencil

December 9, 1917 — January 16, 2004

John S. Stencil 86, R5162 County Road H, Edgar, walked into the arms of the Lord on January 16, 2004, at Marywood Convalescent Center, Wausau. John was born December 9, 1917 in Poniatowski, son of the late Anton and Rose (Urmanski) Stencil. He married Regina Z. Hintz on October 25, 1938 at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Bevent. Together they started dairy farming in 1943, in the town of Rib Falls, until retiring in 1980. John attended Holy Family Catholic School in Poniatowski and the Marenisco Elementary School, Marenisco, Mich. After school he worked at the Boniface Lumber Company, on the Gogebic Branch, as a Cookee, (kitchen helper), and his father's; The Anton Stencil Logging Camp, as a bookkeeper and a foreman. He also worked for E.J. Joyce, a prominent Chicago businessman, as a caretaker on Wolf Lake, in Watersmeet, Mich. Together with his wife Regina, they farmed in the Edgar area from 1943 to 1980. John also worked for Wausau Iron Works while still dairy farming. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on October 25, 2003. John enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren, hunting, fishing, trapping and numerous trips revisiting Michigan. He also enjoyed singing, yodeling, playing the harmonica, water witching, story telling, as well as drawing and painting pictures, especially on mushrooms, and regularly getting together with the family, relatives and friends to play cribbage or cards. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Edgar. Many of us will choose to remember him as a companion on our journey in life. Survivors include his wife Regina, Edgar, the children who loved, admired and laughed with their dad are JoAnn (Patrick) Rauen, Edgar, Adrienne Stencil, Grand Prairie, Texas, Beverly (Daryl) Dvorak, Lake Tomahawk, Sandra (Herman) Danczyk, Marathon, James (Patricia Framke) Stencil, Edgar and Terrance (Debbie Heise) Stencil, Edgar. He is further survived by 18 grandchildren, Kitty (Ronald) Knetter, Edgar, Laura (Scott) Achterberg, Wausau, Patrick Jr. (Ann) Rauen, Wausau, Robert (Regina) Rauen, Edgar, Deborah Hill, Darrin (Kristy) Ceranski and Francis Lee Ceranski, all of Texas, Dean Dvorak, Little Chute, Robin (Russell) Henly, Eau Claire, Shelly (Daniel) Heerts, LaCrosse, Christopher Danczyk, Marathon, Scott Danczyk, Peshtigo, Michael, Jacqueline, Jonathan, Rebecca, Andrea and Laura Stencil all of Edgar, 21 great grandchildren, April and Starla Knetter, Edgar, Adam and Shawn Achterberg, Wausau, Marie and Benjamin Rauen, Wausau, Samantha and Jacob Rauen, Edgar, Alexandra, Victoria and Alaina Hill, Collin, Calli, Kelsie and Katherine Ceranski, Texas, Tabitha and Tessa Henly, Eau Claire, Seth, Caleb, Joshua and Aaron Heerts, LaCrosse, four brothers, Joseph, Stencil, Edgar, George (Ann) Stencil, Edgar, Wallace (Arlene) Stencil, Edgar, Duane (Betty) Stencil, New Lisbon, two sisters, Florence (Marcel) Carr, Wausau and Adeline (Omar) Boser, Piggott, Arkansas, two sisters-in-law, Esther (Clifford) Kolpack and Susanne (John) Burish, Marathon. In heaven he joins his parents, two children, John Jr., and Theresa, one great grandchild, Jamie Lynn Knetter, two brothers, Lawrence and Ervin Stencil, one brother-in-law, Clement Myszka, one sister-in-law, Emily Stencil, his Godparents, Sister Carmella Urmanski, and Joseph Stencil Sr. Visitation for John will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2004 at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Edgar. There will be a parish rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Monday night at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the celebration of the funeral mass at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Edgar. Rev. Norman Boneck will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be Patrick Rauen Jr., Robert Rauen, Dean Dvorak, Christopher Danczyk, Scott Danczyk, Michael Stencil and Jonathan Stencil.
