John F. "Jack" Spencer
93, Wausau, died Saturday February 27, 2010 at the Hospice House, surrounded by family.
He was born July 24, 1916 in Chicago, son of the late Matthew and Caroline (Dorian) Spencer. After the death of his parents at an early age, Jack was raised by his cousins, John and Sarah Trainor in West Chicago.
During World War II, Jack served his country in the US Army. After military service, he moved to Wausau to work with his brother, Tom Trainor as a bookkeeper and service technician at the former Marathon County Oil Company. On September 27, 1947, he was united in Marriage with Winifred "Win" MacCormick at St. James Catholic Church, Wausau. She survives.
Jack's keen wit and personable nature led to a variety of interests and involvements through the years. He enjoyed golf, bowling, darts, playing Bridge and Cross Country Skiing. Time spent with his family was most special and treasured. Spending summers at the Clear Lake home in Tomahawk will be remembered by family as a favorite of Jack's. Among his many involvements, he was a member of the Wausau Elk's Lodge No. 248 since 1946; held the oldest membership of the Knights of Columbus, George Schreier Council No. 1069, Wausau; and a member of the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau. He served as treasurer of Congressman Dave Obey's Better-Way Club for over 25 years. He was a charter member of the Church of St. Anne and the Thomas Moore Club, and served his parish through the years in several capacities.
Survivors include his wife, Win Spencer, Wausau, children, Kathryn (Lance Nienow) Spencer, Merrill; Laurie (John) Dolan, Wausau, Evelyn (Paul Palecek) Pellett, Wausau; Mary (John) Evans, Weston; Patricia (Jerry) Laridaen, Appleton, Thomas (Melody) Spencer, Jackson, Wis., grandchildren, Sarah (Terry) Brown, Ryan Plisch, Megan Pellett, Adam Pellett, Aaron (Tana) Evans, Justin (Jessica) Evans, Brea Evans and great grandchildren, Patrick, Elise, Anna, Ireland, Mason, Hudson, Kali, Hannah and Ein.
Besides his parents and step-parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Ihlenfeldt, two brothers, George and Matthew Spencer, one sister, Evelyn Spencer, "brother", Tom Trainor, "sister" Irene Curtis and mother and father-in-law, Laura and Donald MacCormick.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. Thursday March 4, 2010 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. Rev. Steven Brice will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Thursday from 3:30 p.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the staff at Wausau Manor Nursing Home and the Hospice House for the care and kindness extended to Jack during his time with them.
