John A. Nienow

August 17, 1925 — October 21, 2010

John A. Nienow 85, town of Hewitt, died Thursday, October 21, 2010 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Mount View Care Center, Wausau. He was born August 17, 1925 in the town of Easton, son of the late John W. and Erlynda (Krueger) Nienow. On July 2, 1949, he married Gretchen Kreager in the town of Pine River. She survives. John served in the United States Army during World War II and served with the 25th Infantry Division during the occupation of Japan. He was a dairy farmer in the town of Hewitt and a dedicated member of the NFO (National Farmers Organization). For many years, John served as the town clerk for the town of Hewitt and also served as Vice President for Zion Lutheran Church, town of Easton. In his later years, he enjoyed feeding the birds and was an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Gretchen Nienow; seven children, Marjorie (Wayne) Viergutz, Ellen (David) Hussong, Nancy (Walter) Borchardt, Christine Lerch, all of Wausau, LaDonna (David) Fermanich, Merrill, Becky (Michael) Faehling and Robert (Lisa) Nienow, both of Wausau; one daughter-in-law, Ruthie (Bill) Scudder, Ortonville, Mich.; 17 grandchildren, Deon (Terry) Viergutz, Mount Airy, Md., Kerry (Chuck) Osterbrink, Merrill, John (Kari) Borchardt, Wausau, Ron (Melissa) Borchardt, Wausau, Jeremy (Cheri) Scudder, Ypsilanti, Mich., Brent (Katie) Lerch, Wausau, Matthew Hussong, Wausau, Philip (Heather) Hussong, Minneapolis, Minn., Dana (Andrew) Williams, Stevens Point, Erin Faehling, Cedar City, Utah, Jessica and Riley Faehling, both of Wausau, Hannah and Gretta Fermanich, both of Merrill, Alicia Lerch, Madison, Taylor and Christopher Nienow, both of Wausau; 15 great grandchildren, David, Mike, Jonathon, Isaac, Evan, Trenton, Elli, Nickolas, Brooke, Ian, Reese, Jacob, Eric, Kyle and Autumn; two brothers, Gaylord Nienow, Irma, Wis. and Clarence (Elaine) Nienow, Wausau; three sisters, LaVerne Erickson, Wausau, Virginia Ermeling, Wausau and Mary Ann Wertnen, Panama City, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ernest Nienow; and one sister, Joyce Nienow. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 25, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church, town of Easton. Rev. David Faulkner will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau. Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and the staff at Mount View Care Center for all the wonderful care and support given to John.
