John G. Mayer

John G. Mayer, age 59, of Marshfield, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at his childhood home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 10, 1967, to George and Patricia (Spielman) Mayer in Wild Rose, Wisconsin. John had a passion for learning and pursued higher education throughout his life, earning multiple master’s degrees as well as his doctorate. Most recently, he worked at Marshfield Medical Center, where he specialized in genetic research.

John enjoyed many hobbies and interests throughout his life. He was a devoted Star Wars fan and also enjoyed The Lord of the Rings and Dungeons & Dragons. He collected medieval armor and Star Wars memorabilia, including full-body Star Wars suits. John was a member of an astronomy club and had a strong interest in space and NASA. He also enjoyed building large wooden model ships and airplanes, as well as LEGO sets from Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and NASA. A longtime Green Bay Packers fan, John especially enjoyed attending games with Joe and Steve.

John is survived by his mother, Patricia (Spielman) Mayer; sister, Mary (Joe) Schneider; niece, Susan (Cody) Horne; nephew, Joe (Sarah) Schneider; great-nieces, Claire and Ellis; great-nephews, Justin and Kasen; good friends, Steve Grosheck, Joe Rudolph, Ralph Haefner; and his beloved puppy, Pippin.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Mayer; uncles, Frank Mayer, Marlin Etlicher, Duke Schueller; aunt, Romayne; and his beloved dog, Elsa.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Wausau, with Rev. Tom Lindner presiding. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Wausau. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services on Tuesday at church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John’s memory to the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute- Cancer Care & Research Center and Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
