John K. "Jack" Almlie

He was born September 20, 1933, in L'Anse, Michigan, son of the late John and Belle (Aleckson) Almlie. Growing up in Michigan's U.P. provided Jack with many memories. Special among these were rafting and fishing in the summer, ice fishing in winter, playing hockey on Lake Superior and spending entire days with friends in the woods.
The Almlie family moved to Wausau when Jack was 12 years old, settling on the west side where they were members of Trinity Lutheran Church and Jack attended Trinity School. Jack graduated from Wausau Senior High School where he was active in many sports.
A proud member of the US Marine Corps, Jack enlisted in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1955 attaining the rank of Sergeant. His service in the Korean War included that of air traffic control operator at Iwakuni, Japan. After service he became a member of the American Legion, Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau.
On October 19, 1957, he married Karen Westphal in Wausau. She survives. Following marriage, he was involved in various sales positions and retired in 1997 from Imperial Inc. of Green Bay. Through the years, Jack enjoyed several sports, among them, golf, softball, pot belly basketball and bowling--having once bowled the perfect game.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Almlie, Weston, and his four daughters and three grandchildren, of whom he was very proud, Lisa (Sean) O'Rourke, Madison; Mary (Jeff Sedivy) Almlie, Naperville, Ill., and their son, Jackson; Ellen (Dan) Hartwig, Wausau, and their children, Elizabeth and Daniel; Patti Almlie, Madison, Brothers-in-law, Vern (Marlys) Westphal, Arizona; Robert (Suzanne) Metz, Hazelhurst; Dennis (Betty) Metz, Plover, Sisters-in-law, Kathy (Gary) Bielen, Wausau; Char (Wayne) Carr, Wausau, and many nieces and nephews.
